Thoughtful Self-Care Gifts for Someone Going Through a Hard Time

By Lyndsay Sunderlin, founder of Angel OH Botanicals, Youngstown, Ohio · Updated September 27, 2026 · General education, not medical advice

Quick answer: The best gifts for someone going through a hard time are simple, gentle, and low pressure: unscented or lightly scented comfort items, small practical luxuries, and gift cards that let them choose. If they are in medical treatment, skip new skincare unless their care team says it is fine.
Thoughtful Self-Care Gifts for Someone Going Through a Hard Time

Our founder is a breast cancer survivor, so this topic is close to home. These ideas come from what people going through hard seasons often say they actually appreciated.

1. Ask before you choose a scent

Illness, treatment, and stress can make people sensitive to smells. If you are not sure, choose something unscented or very lightly scented, or ask a close family member first.

2. Keep it small and practical

Small comforts get used. Lip gloss or lip care, a hand lotion bar for dry hands, a cozy pair of socks, or a favorite snack are easy to enjoy on a hard day.

3. Give them a quiet moment

A bath soak, a roll-on oil for wrists and temples, or a good book gives someone permission to slow down for a few minutes.

4. Let them choose

A gift card takes the pressure off. It lets the person pick what feels right for them, when they feel ready.

5. Check before giving skincare during treatment

If the person is in active medical treatment, their skin may react differently. Skincare gifts are best checked with their care team first, which is another reason a gift card can be the kindest choice.

6. Add a note

A handwritten note often means more than the gift. Say you are thinking of them, and offer something specific, like a ride, a meal, or a visit.
